First aid training for our young people in foster care

We held another of our popular Drop ‘n Shop days for our foster families based in our Essex office yesterday.

We used the opportunity to provide our young people with basic first aid training, as well as a number of other activities, including making their own lunch, burning off energy in the play park, and making and flying their own paper aeroplanes.

Foster carers dropped off the young people with our team at a local Scout Hut at 10.30am. Their first activity of the day was an introduction to First Aid. The skills learned included how to call 999, the Recovery position and CPR. A highlight seemed to be the bandaging part of the course! Every young person received a certificate recognising their achievement in completing the program.

Following the First Aid training, the young people made their own lunch, which helps develop their life and independence skills. They selected their own filling for the wraps they were making. The choice of fillings included cheese, ham and salad.

After lunch, Davina and Gary joined us for games in the park adjoining the the Scout Hut. A number of the young people achieved their own milestones learning or gaining confidence to climb up equipment, slide down poles and use the zip wire. We also made paper aeroplanes and flew them around the Scout Hut. We ended the day with a ball game to help the young people with their decision making and co-ordination.

Our Drop ‘n Shop days have proved very popular with our foster carer families as it allows them time to to have a break from their day to day role as foster carers. It also allows our foster children a chance to meet other young people in care. A number of new friendships were developed as they helped each other complete activities.
